Camp Desert Center 92nd Evacuation Field Hospital
Located a few miles west of the town of Desert Center off Eagle Mountain
Road lays the remnants of Camp Desert Center, where the 92nd Evacuation
Hospital was stationed from May- December, 1943. Previous to the 92nd's
assigment here, they were stationed at the Camp Freda Hospital. The
hospital at Camp Desert Center had a 300 bed facility and a full staff
of doctors and nurses to treat wounds and illnesses ranging from
dehydration to surgery. The 92nd went on to fight in the South Pacific
and took part in the New Guinea, Luzon and Leyte Campaigns, and ended up
in occupied Japan. |
